The main goal of the SmartPlay project is to reduce the dropout rate among female adolescents (girls aged 12–18) in sports clubs and to encourage their long-term participation in sport and physical activity. As young people grow older, their motivation and opportunities to stay active often decrease. This decline is especially noticeable among girls, making it essential to develop targeted strategies that support them in continuing organized sport for as long as possible.
Research shows that young athletes stop participating in sports for several common reasons, including:
For girls in particular, additional challenges often play a role, such as:
The SmartPlay project addresses these challenges by using artificial intelligence (AI) as a powerful prevention tool. Through AI-driven data analysis, the project will identify early signs of disengagement, such as declining motivation or performance. This approach allows coaches to intervene early, rather than reacting only after problems have already led to dropout.
AI will also help develop personalized solutions, including tailored motivation strategies and engagement techniques based on each athlete’s performance, personal circumstances, and psychological needs. This individualized approach ensures that girls receive the right support at the right time.
A key outcome of the project will be the creation of an interactive e-learning platform. This platform will provide coaches and sports organizations with easy access to AI-based methods and digital tools designed to reduce dropout rates. By improving knowledge and skills at the coaching level, the project aims to create more supportive, inclusive, and motivating sports environments for girls.
Beyond local impact, SmartPlay will strengthen cross-border cooperation by establishing a European network of sports organizations focused on AI-driven dropout prevention. This network will support knowledge sharing, best practices, and long-term collaboration across countries.
The SmartPlay project brings together five organizations from four European countries:
Together, these partners aim to create innovative, practical solutions that help girls stay active, confident, and engaged in sport.
